Tifton (and Tifton International, on separate page) were subsidiaries of Synthetic Plastics Company
(SPC) of Newark, New Jersey. The label focused heavily on comic book characters, with both songs and
stories.
As with other SPC labels, some songs here are just recycled tracks from previous albums rather than
newly recorded material. Discogs.com provides a typical rundown of the tracks on 78002:
"The Sensational Guitars Of Dan & Dale", on this particular album, featured members of The Blues
Project and members of The Sun Ra Arkestra on many tracks. However, tracks 5, 6, 11 and 12 were
remixes of released 1964-1965 tracks by Frankie Stein And His Ghouls.
Track A5, "Flight Of The Batman", appears on Frankie Stein And His Ghouls - Monster Sounds And
Dance Music in a slightly different mix as "Dreamin' & Screamin'".
Track B5 (CD track 11), "The Riddler's Retreat" (an uncredited "She Loves You" ripoff), first appears on
Frankie Stein And His Ghouls - Monster Melodies as "Ain't Got No Body" with added ghoulish sound fx.
Tracks A6 and B6 (CD track 12) both appear on Frankie Stein And His Ghouls - Introducing Frankie
Stein And His Ghouls from 1964, in radically different "horror" mixes. A6, "Joker Is Wild," appears as
"Goon River," minus harmonica but with sax solo, and B6, "The Bat Cave" shows up as "Neck Twist".
A6, "Joker Is Wild," also appears on Frankie Stein And His Ghouls - Shock! Terror! Fear! in a harmonica
remix very similar to the Batman version, as "Who's Afraid Of The Weerdo Wolf."
All the releases were in both mono and stereo except the last one, S-78008, which was apparently
stereo only.
Most of the releases featured a blue-grey label (sometimes darker blue) with silver print. At far left is the mono label and center left, the stereo label. Tifton's stereo releases also had an "audio series" logo to the right of the center hole (as well as on the front cover). The last release, S-78008, had a red label with black print. |
