The Mercury Labels...

Mercury and its subsidiaries (Fontana, Philips, Smash) and labels it distributed (Intrepid, Peachtree, Wayside) during 1968-70 put out essentially no commercial stereo singles. In late 1967, Philips did release the equivalent of a mono/stereo promo with a commercial label, but that seems to have been a pressing plant anomaly. Reports of some copies of "Summertime Blues" by Blue Cheer playing stereo also seems to be a pressing plant mixup, since the majority of the copies of that single (and the label copy) indicate the corporate decision was to release it in mono. The one Rod Stewart Mercury single with indication of stereo master use may or may not play stereo.

Far more interesting is Mercury's "DJ" series, which released many mono/stereo promos throughout all the labels. From those promos we can see that Mercury's master numbers used a "1-" prefix for mono and a "2-" prefix for stereo. Sometime around February-March, 1969, Mercury started using a red label for the stereo side of the mono/stereo promos, but this wasn't fully consistent across all the labels.

We are not a catalog, nor can we provide the records listed below. We have no association with any of these record labels. MERCURY

Mercury much preferred stereo singles as promos, as virtually all of their commercial singles from 1968-70 were mono. We did find one single marked with stereo master numbers on both sides, Rod Stewart's "Handbags And Gladrags/Man Of Constant Sorrow" (see top left), but we have not verified that this single plays stereo.

As far as promos go, Mercury was a gold mine for stereo dating back to October, 1967, well before the other labels began reintroducing stereo singles. Because of the huge number of stereo promos, we have listed those we have seen below.

The early stereo promos had white labels. The earliest stereo promo was Horst Jankowski's "A Man And A Woman/A Lover's Concerto" from October, 1967 (middle left), which was numbered with the commercial catalog number with a "DJ-2" prefix, the "DJ" denoting promo and the "2" being Mercury's prefix for stereo masters. After that one, stereo promos were usually mono/stereo plug-side affairs in Mercury's DJ series. The mono side remained with a white label throughout the 1967-70 period, while the stereo side varied. Before March, 1969, the stereo side was either white or pink (bottom left). In March, 1969, Mercury went to a red label for the stereo side (see right).

Mercury Notes:
General note: The missing numbers in the DJ series are predominantly mono promos, but some are unreleased.
1. Commercial copy is mono on both sides.
2. Both the DJ and commercial copies are listed in Ruppli's book, but there seems to be some question whether either was actually released on Mercury. Apparently the single was transferred to Philips 40625.
3. "Stereo" side is electronic stereo.
4. This David Bowie promo was also issued in mono on both sides.
5. This single was pulled and the song reissued as a B-side to "My Way Of Giving" on 73175, released 2/71.

FONTANA

Fontana was a subsidiary label to Mercury Records that lasted to the start of 1970. They put out no commercial stereo singles during the 1968-69 period, but like other Mercury labels, put out quite a few mono/stereo promotional singles for which the commercial counterparts were mono.

INTREPID

Intrepid was a Chicago-based, Mercury-distributed label that was in business during 1969 and 1970. The released no stereo singles, but did have several mono/stereo promos.

Peachtree was an independent label from Atlanta, Georgia, that for a short time (1969-70) was distributed by Mercury. During the 1968-70 period, they released no stereo singles, but the two mono/stereo promos they released while distributed by Mercury are listed below.

PHILIPS

Philips was a Mercury subsidiary. Philips did not release many commercial stereo singles until January, 1972. Philips indicated a stereo master by the use of a "2-" prefix vs. a "1-" prefix for mono, e.g., The 4 Seasons' "Electric Stories" 1-43354 mono and 2-43354 stereo. All commercial singles before 1972 had the mono master numbers on the label except one.

Normal promo copies had the same numbers as the commercial counterpart, but had a white label. Special promos such as two-sided mono promos or EPs had a special numbering sequence with a "DJP-" prefix. Philips began issuing mono/stereo promo copies in 1967, starting with DJP-17. About the same time, they issued a white-label mono/stereo record with "Letter From A Teenage Son" by Brandon Wade. Unlike the special DJ series, they gave this promo the number 40503, then released the same mono/stereo single with a commercial label with no promo indication (with a picture sleeve). This was the only commercial stereo single released before 1972 actually marked Stereo, with a stereo master number on the label. It also pre-dated virtually all the "re-rentry" commercial stereo singles released by the other labels on this page.

The known mono/stereo promos from 1967-70 are also listed below. Interestingly, two of these are from LPs, not singles.

There have been reports that some commercial copies of Blue Cheer's "Summertime Blues" play stereo, although are not marked as such. All copies we have seen have the mono master number printed on the label, but any such stereo copy should have the stereo master number "2-35783" in the dead wax. There was a mono/stereo promo for "Summertime Blues," so it is possible the stereo stamper was used from the promo to press some commercial sides, but we have not been able to verify this.

SMASH

Smash was a Mercury subsidiary, When started in the early 1960s, it was used for Mercury's rock and roll, country, and miscellaneous non-pop, non-jazz releases. By the mid-1960s, it had drifted mainly into Mercury's C&W arm. Smash lasted until March, 1970, and put out nowhere near the number of stereo promos as parent label Mercury, primarily because most country promos were mono on both sides.

We could find no commercial copies in stereo. Some copies of Roger Miller's "Little Green Apples" are marked with the stereo master number on the A-side, although others are not. We believe this was a typo.

Smash stereo promos, 1968-70 (commercial number):
DJS-13 - 1/68 - Jay & The Techniques - Strawberry Shortcake (M/S) S-2142
DJS-14 - 4/68 - Jay & The Techniques - Baby Make Your Own Sweet Music (M/S) S-2154

WAYSIDE

Wayside was an independent label distributed by Mercury, operating from 1967-1970. Their claim to fame was that they were the home of the country novelty duo Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan. They put out no stereo singles, but had a handful of mono/stereo promos.
