UNITED ARTISTS United artists started with stereo promo singles in the summer of 1967. These early stereo promos had special yellow labels (see top left); their commercial counterparts were mono. Most of the commercial counterparts had the orange and red, or blue and orange labels of the 1967 era. Some of these early yellow-label promos, such as the Easybeats' single, are quite collectible. United Artists discontinued the yellow labels when they changed labels to a black label with an orange field at the left side (see lower left). For a time in late 1968, the promo counterparts were white, but by the start of 1970, promos became the same black and orange labels as the commercial copies. United Artists began issuing commercial stereo singles in January, 1970, and most of the commrcial singles during that year were issued in stereo. Promos tended to mirror the commercial releases, but often both mono and stereo versions of promos were available. The numbering system used for stereo singles and promos was erratic, probably based on which pressing plant had the labels printed. "SUA" seemed to be the most well-used prefix, although sometimes the "UA" prefix was used with an "S" suffix. The "UA" prefix without the "S" was the usual mono nomenclature, but sometimes this was used for stereo records, with the only stereo giveaway the stereo master number (which started with "UAST" instead of "UA"). Mono/stereo promos were usually carrying mono catalog numbers on one side and stereo on the other. | |
