This started as a series of 2-CD sets that repeats much of the material from earlier R&B sets, such as Rhythm and Blues and Solid Gold Soul. After four volumes of regular-priced double- CD sets in the R604- series, the series switched to single-disc, 20 song, retail offerings in the M187- series.

When the retail versions of the series came out, the pitch to dealers was that over a half-million sets had been sold through TV advertising and infomercials.
