The BCP-6000 series started in the latter half of 1956. To start the series, three albums were
reissued from the ongoing BCP-1 series. It became the main series for new issues for Bethlehem,
surviving until 1964.
When King Records was sold to Gusto in 1975, the Bethlehem label was split out of the deal and sold at
liquidation prices to the Cayre Brothers (Joseph, Kenneth and Stanley) who owned Salsoul Records.
The Cayres originally bought the label with the intention of issuing the material on 8-track tapes, but
quickly had revised their thinking towards reissuing the albums in a new vinyl series distributed by their
own Caytronics Distribution. The reissue series distributed by Caytronics was confusing, since it used
the same catalog series (BCP-6000 series) as the originals, yet the albums weren't necessarily the
same as those with the corresponding numbers in the original series.
The first Bethlehem label for the BCP-6000 Series (far left) was the "leaf cluster" label, used in 1956 for original pressings of BCP-6001 to BCP-6012. As of January, 1957, with the issue of BCP-6013, the label changed to the Bethlehem "box logo" label (near left), used for the remainder of the series. Both labels were red or dark red with silver print.
The "box logo" label had a stereo counterpart (far left) that was blue with silver print. Bethlehem's treatment of promotional albums varied. In the early years with the "leaf cluster" label, the jackets and labels were stamped with a rubber stamp which said "D.J. SAMPLE COPY." Later, some promo albums used the white label with black print shown at near left. The 1970s reissues distributed by Caytronics used a gold stamp on the album jacket.
The 1970s reissues distributed by Caytronics had either a grey label with black print (far left), or a gold label with black print (near left). Both had the same label design, with "BETHLEHEM" printed five times around the label's edge. |
