When Archie Bleyer decided to liquidate the Cadence label in 1964, Andy Williams wanted to buy
the masters of his own material. Bleyer was willing to sell, but only if Williams bought the entire catalog.
Williams agreed. At the time, Williams was recording for Columbia, and he began reissuing some of the
Cadence material on Columbia. The mono and stereo numbers are given for the early Columbia
releases (mono is CL-, stereo is CS-). Later Williams started the Barnaby label for the purposes of
reissuing Cadence masters and other new material. The early Columbia issues can be thought of as
pre-Barnaby issues.

BARNABY ISSUES: Barnaby's debut as a separate label came in 1970. During the 1970-73 period, they were distributed by CBS, then switched to MGM in 1973. In 1974, they moved distributorship to Janus/GRT. Aside from being Cadence's reissue label, Barnaby got a big boost in 1970 when Ray Stevens signed with the label. He was their best selling artist throughout the 1970s. Jimmy Buffett's first two albums were also on Barnaby, and they have collector's interest today.
The following were distributed by CBS. The first Barnaby label was blue with black print. The Barnaby logo, a stylized "B" which resembled a treble clef, was in brown in a white box at left of the center hole. Under the white box it said "BARNABY RECORDS" on two lines. To the right of the center hole, in gold print, it said, "Distributed by CBS Records. CBS, Inc., 51 West 52 Street, New York City." Around the bottom of the label, again in gold print, was, "A PRODUCT OF BARNABY RECORDS, 8899 BEVERLY BLVD., LOS ANGELES, CALIF. 90048".

Here the numbering sequence changes to CBS Consolidated Series. In mid-1970, CBS changed to a new numbering system where they had one catalog sequence, including Columbia, Epic, and all subsidiaries and distributed labels. For that reason, the CBS-distributed Barnaby numbering sequence is not a continuous series of catalog numbers from this point.

At this point, distribution changes to MGM. Catalog series changes to the BRS-15000 Series. Label changes from the blue label to the multicolor label with black print. When distribution changed to MGM in 1973, the label was redesigned. The background of the label was a drawing of a tree at the right of the label, with a melted vinyl album draped over one of the branches. At left is the end of a walkway with two steps. The clef-like Barnaby logo is in a small circle to the left of center. Around the top of the label, it said, "BARNABY RECORDS, 816 N. LA CIENEGA BLVD., LOS ANGELES, CALIF. 90069". Around the bottom of the label it read, "DISTRIBUTED BY MGM RECORDS, INC., 7165 SUNSET BLVD., HOLLYWOOD, CALIF. 90046". Promotional copies used a white label with the drawing in grey tones and black print. At the left near the top of the label it said, "Special Disc Jockey Record, NOT FOR SALE."

BRS-15006 - Sand - Sand [4/73] The album has a gatefold cover picturing a sandwich

expensive to produce. The band was from Portland Oregon, and included Jack Meussdorffer (aka Jack
Charles, guitar/vocals), Dan Ross (steel guitar/guitar/vocals), Dan Wilson (guitar/vocals), Rich Gooch
(bass/vocals), and Steve Williams (drums). Meussdorffer and Gooch later played in Quarterflash (with

At this point, distribution changes to Janus. Catalog Series changes to BR-5000 and BR-6000 Series. The label retained the multicolor drawing with the tree and melted record, but the logo at left now has the outline of the Janus logo behind it in yellow. The information around the edge of the label is now in a yellow band, which runs around the edge of the label except at the extreme left, where the logo is. The legend on the top of the label is the same as for the MGM-distributed label described above, but the bottom information changed to, "DISTRIBUTED BY JANUS RECORDS, 1633 BROADWAY, NEW YORK, N.Y., 10019." For the reissues of the Candid label jazz albums, there is an additional line at the top left of the label, in quotation marks, that says, "BARNABY/CANDID JAZZ."
