Gordy Album Discography, Part 1 (1962-1981) Gordy Records was a subsidiary of Motown Records, named for Motown's founder, Berry Gordy. It
started in 1962 and was the home of the Temptations, Martha and the Vandellas, Edwin Starr, Bobby
Taylor, Rick James, Luther Allison, the Undisputed Truth, High Inergy, Tina Marie, and others.

The first Gordy label was purple with silver printing. "Gordy" in yellow script above the center hole. Behind the Gordy logo is a circle with "IT'S WHAT'S IN THE GROVES THAT COUNT". This label was used until approximately April 1968, GLPS-927. The second Gordy label was purple with silver print. "GORDY" to the left of the center hole, a yellow wedge running from the left of the label to the right. This label was used through the 1980's. |

Color varied on the labels, from the plum color above left, to the purple color above right, to a color approaching red (far left). Early deejay labels (near left) were the same design, on white with black print. In the 1970s, Gordy usually did not use a special label for deejay copies, opting for a sticker on the jacket instead. |
