VEE-JAY II (1967-1971)
The Vee-Jay masters have been licensed, or "rented out," many times over the years. The albums below
are a few of these related issues that came out during the period 1967-1970, when Vee-Jay International
was trying to make a go of it before issuing their own new series. There were three deals of note during
this period, one with Springboard International that resulted in a lot of albums on the Upfront and Trip
labels, one with Liberty Records that resulted in four albums on Liberty's Sunset Records subsidiary, and
one with Buddah Records, who issued Vee-Jay reissues in a special "First Generation Soul" Series. It
was the cash generated from these licenses that eventually allowed Vee-Jay International to bootstrap
itself up and begin reissuing the Vee-Jay albums (see Part 7)
and then to issue new series (see Part 8).
Springboard International, 1967
After buying the company from the bankruptcy trustee in 1967, Randy Wood and Betty Chiappetta
wasted no time in making a deal to license some of the old Vee-Jay product. In addition to licensing
single songs to other labels so that they could be included in compilations on those labels, Vee-Jay
International entered into a deal with Springboard International to license a large number of titles. These
were not only put on the Springboard various artists collections, but entire albums were put on
Springboard's Upfront subsidiary R&B label. Another subsidiary, Trip Records, issued perhaps the entire
Vee-Jay Gospel Series, mastered from the Vee-Jay stampers. Below, we have listed the issues on the
"Trip/VJ Gospel Series" we have verified. The one album we have eximined closely, TLP-7067, had the
Vee-Jay matrix number scratched out in the runout groove area, with the Trip information added.
Unfortunately, Springboard was not known for high-quality releases. The pressings tended to be noisy,
the album covers fell apart almost by themselves, and there were often only four cuts to each album
side. In other words, Springboard was a low-budget operation that sold cheap albums in supermarkets
and such. That said, there were some nice surprises on some of their records (like the true stereo
versions of Wilson Pickett's early chart records).
Liberty Records, 1968
About 1968, Vee-Jay International also made a deal with Liberty Records to issue about five albums on
Liberty's budget subsidiary, Sunset Records. These albums were interesting inasmuch as they were not
just reissues of Vee-Jay albums, but all-new compilations.
Kat's Karavan, 1968
Jim Lowe, the Texas disc jockey (not the singer) whose album had been the first Vee-Jay album
(LP-100), also licensed the album to reissue issue another Old Favorites album, this time a
double-LP set. Lowe, who had originally been with WRR-AM in Dallas, had by this time moved to
KERA-FM in Dallas.
Buddah Records, 1969
In 1969, Buddah Records reissued about a dozen Vee-Jay albums under their "Late Night" and "First
Generation" series. Most were straight reissues with different covers and titles, but there were three
various artists compilation albums from Vee-Jay and Oldies-33 material, also.
Most of the early Upfront issues were on a label that was dark red with white printing (far left), but there
were several other color labels, all with the same graphic design, such as the creme colored label shown
at near left.
|
||
They also had a "Super II Series" of double-LP sets that used a red label with black print (far left) and a
maroon label with silver print (near left). Quality control was such that it was possible to get two different
label colors within a 2-LP set. The 2-LP sets were skimpy, sometimes with only four tracks per side. All
issues were "stereo," although often rechanneled stereo.
|
||
Another color used by Upfront was grey with red print (far left). The Sunset labels (near left) were black
with silver print, with the logo at the left of the center hole. There was a line running vertically through (in
back of) the logo box, with the left of the line being light blue.
|
||
Trip reissues of the Vee-Jay Gospel Series used a special "Trip VJ Gospel" logo (far left). The labels
(shown near left) were the same as the other Trip labels of the time, black with silver print.
|
||
The Kats Karavan label for the 1968 record was white with red print (far left). The Buddah "Late Night"
and "First Generation" series used the regular Buddah label (near left).

Trip TLP-7000 Gospel Series: There were others issues, perhaps the entire Vee-Jay Gospel Series. All had corresponding numbers to the Vee-Jay series (i.e., Vee-Jay 5001 becomes Trip 7001, etc.), and had the same cover graphics with a Trip logo replacing the Vee-Jay logo. We do not know the date of issue, but believe it to be 1970 or 1971 for all. | |
