About January, 1960, Columbia discontinued using the special white labels for promotional copies (at
least for a time). Instead, they used a large red rubber stamp on the back cover saying,
"DEMONSTRATION/Not for Sale" (see illustration at right). The labels themselves were the regular red
and black labels, either with a sticker on one side denoting it to be "For Demonstration Use Only, Not For
Sale," or a white stamp across the label with "Demonstration Record - Not For Sale."
By mid-1960, Columbia made some revisions to the way they designed the "pasteover slick." Instead of
having the mono front covers have the Columbia logo at the bottom, both sets of information were printed
at the top of the slick, with the stereo number and banner just above the mono (see illustration at left).
This allowed the Columbia logo to be near the top of the jacket cover for both mono and stereo releases.
Rather than using "monaural," they just called the mono albums "Regular." On the stereo albums, both
the mono and stereo numbers were visible, but the slick was moved up for the mono jackets to where only
the mono number was shown. This configuration was used by Columbia for the remainder of the time
they produced both mono and stereo records.
Original pressings of mono albums on this page had the "six eye" label (far left). Stereo counterparts are shown at near left. Both mono and stereo albums had the deep groove about a half-inch in from the label's edge. | ||
Only a few (at most) mono promo copies on this page had the white promo label with red print (far left).
We found only this one, and we did not find any black-and-white stereo promo counterpart labels for these
numbers. That said, not all catalog numbers had promo labels at all.
Canadian issues of Columbia albums generally had the same covers as the US versions. The early canadian labels were a dark maroon instead of red, with the same "notes and microphone" logo, but in Canada this early label was used considerably longer than in the US. When the Canadian labels finally changed to the "six eye" label, it was the dark red and silver version shown at near left. |
||
In early 1960, Columbia discontinued the white promotional labels and went to either a sticker on the label (far left) or a white stamp across the label (near left). |
