In 1961, Columbia started a campaign to promote the new artists on their label. One of the ways they did
this was with a sticker on the front covers of new artists' albums (see right). This sticker was a large silver
circle with a star in it, with the legend "A New Star on Columbia Records." Although this sticker appeared
on some of the first-released commercial pressings, it was mainly aimed at deejays, and was very often
on promotional pressings for new artists.
All the albums on this page are known to have originally been issued with the "six eye" label. By late
1961, however, Columbia started using pressing plants with newer equipment. Gone was the "deep
groove," replaced by a tiny ledge. This is sometimes referred to as the "flat edge" variation.
Starting in late 1961, both mono and stereo labels started carrying a small "CBS" at the top of the label.
This was not something that changed at a certain date, but rather, pressing plants were told to use up the
stock of old (pre-CBS) labels first, resulting in a mixture of labels for some given releases. Some are
known with the CBS on mono albums, and not on stereo of the same album, and vice versa. Some
have even been found with the CBS on one side and not on the other! Many, but certainly not all, of the
early numbers with the "ledge" variation (i.e., no deep groove), had the small "CBS."
Mono albums on this page had the "six eye" label (far left). Stereo counterparts are shown at near left. Both these illustrate the small "CBS" near the top of the label. | ||
Most promotional albums during this time had a either a sticker on the regular label (far left) or a stamp on the label (near left). Both had a large rubber stamp on the jacket back. At least one promotional album below (Kay Stevens on CL-1716/CS-8516) has been found with the old white-label promo labels last used in early 1960. |
