Columbia Main Series, Part 14:
CL 1800-1899/CS 8600-8699 (1962)

By Randy Watts, Mike Callahan, David Edwards, and Patrice Eyries
Last update: October 30, 2015

Near the end of 1961, a small "CBS" was inserted under the "COLUMBIA" label name at the top, although old label blanks were being used and not all releases had the "CBS." For example, a late as CS 8602 (see right) near the end of the label run, the "CBS" was missing, although most labels had it.

The Summer of 1962 brought several changes to Columbia. Most significant, Columbia's engineering department had developed a new process for faking a stereo effect from a mono source tape. They called this process "Electronically Rechanneled for Stereo." In the June 16, 1962, issue of Billboard Magazine (page 5), they announced they would be issuing rechanneled versions of many of the "Greatest Hits" packages previously only available in mono. These included albums by Doris Day (8635), Frankie Laine (8636), Percy Faith (8637), Mitch Miller (8638), Marty Robbins (8639) and a various artists' package called Hall of Fame Hits (8640). In addition, previously mono-only albums like Brubeck's Jazz Goes to College (8631) and Miles Davis' Miles Ahead (8633) were included, to be shortly joined by Mathis' Johnny's Greatest Hits (8644). They also began rechanneling current releases, starting with Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall (8612), released in July.

Columbia's rechanneling process involved a slight time delay and some bass-treble separation between channels. Both RCA and Capitol ("Duophonic") used similar processes, but in both the RCA and Capitol cases, the relatively large time delay between channels resulted in a sound that has been described by collectors as "messy" (Duophonic) or "garbage can echo" (RCA). Columbia's rechanneling resulted in a sound not unlike reverb rather than echo, a much less heavy-handed process, although it has been termed "annoying" by some critics of fake stereo in general.

During June of 1962, Columbia changed their label design again. The next label design after the "six eye" label was informally known as the "two eye" label, as there were two CBS logos, one at each of the 9- o'clock and 3-o'clock positions around the label's edge (see illustrations below).

There were several variations of the "two eye" label over the years, as it lasted until 1970. These will be noted in the following pages.

The mono labels for the first releases on this page used the "six eye" label, as illustrated at far left. Promotional copies had a small sticker or white stamp on the label and a large rubber stamp on the rear of the album jacket. The corresponding stereo label is shown at near left. These later "six eye" stereo labels also has a small "CBS" inside the double arrow at the top of the label. The "six eye" label was known to have been used on albums up to and including CL-1819/CS-8619.
The first "two eye" label design for mono releases was red with a white "COLUMBIA" at the top bending around the top edge. In this earliest variation, near the bottom of the label, in small black letters, was "GUARANTEED HIGH FIDELITY." The stereo counterpart (near left) was similar, but the black lettering near the bottom was larger and said "360 SOUND" STEREO "360 SOUND."

Note: The following 23 catalog numbers were set aside for Columbia's push into electronic stereo, or "rechanneled" stereo as they called it. The rechanneled stereo releases generally had the same cover artwork as the mono originals, even down to having the mono numbers, but had a colored border around the original artwork. The missing numbers below before CS-8654 were probably albums that were scheduled to have been reissued in fake stereo, but for some reason, perhaps technical, did not work out. Many of the earliest numbers were released in June, 1962, just at the time the changeover from the six- eye label to the two-eye label was taking place. Although almost all of the rechanneled stereo versions had the new two-eye label, at least some copies of Percy Faith's Greatest Hits were released with the old six-eye label.
