At the start of 1964, Columbia lost one of its biggest selling stars, Johnny Mathis (left), who signed with
Mercury Records. Of course, the only thing to do when that happens is to put out a greatest hits
compilation, which of course, Columbia did (Columbia C2L-34/C2S-834, The Great Years.)
Fortunately for Columbia, Mathis returned to the fold four years later and has remained a Columbia artist
since 1968. He has had over 70 albums chart, and he and Barbra Streisand have been the most
consistent, biggest selling artists Columbia ever had. Streisand has the distinction of having a #1 album in
six different decades, from the 1960s to the 2010s.
The mono releases on this page used the first variation of the "two eye" label (far left), which was red with a white "COLUMBIA" at the top bending around the top edge. Near the bottom of the label, in small black letters, was "GUARANTEED HIGH FIDELITY." The stereo counterpart for releases was similar, but the black lettering near the bottom was larger and said "360 SOUND" STEREO "360 SOUND" with two arrows flanking the black legend at the bottom (near left). | ||
Promotional labels were white with black print (far left). The white labels were used primarily for mono promo copies; the stereo promo copies tended toward using stickers like that shown at near left. |
