1965 was the year that Mitch Miller left Columbia for MCA/Decca. It seems no accident, then, that
suddenly this page has the likes of Paul Revere & The Raiders, Chad & Jeremy, and the Byrds all making
their Columbia debut. Columbia was finally all in for the rock and roll age. As a reward, the Byrds' debut
album made the best-selling album charts a mere 10 days or so after its release, an unprecedented feat
for Columbia.
Starting with albums released in August, 1965, Columbia made a minor change to their label design,
changing the black-on-red lettering near the bottom to an easier-to-read white-on-red. On the mono
releases, the lettering near the bottom of the label which designated "Guaranteed High Fidelity" was
changed to "360 Sound" MONO "360 Sound" with the arrows pointing out from that legend. This was odd,
since it was a stereo motto now used for mono records. On the stereo records, this motto changed color,
but the wording remained the same.
The mono releases on this page up to CL 2376 used the first variation of the "two eye" label (far left), which was red with a white "COLUMBIA" at the top bending around the top edge. Near the bottom of the label, in small black letters, was "GUARANTEED HIGH FIDELITY." The stereo counterpart for releases up to CS 9176 was similar, but the black lettering near the bottom was larger and said "360 SOUND" STEREO "360 SOUND" with two arrows flanking the black legend at the bottom (near left).

Promotional labels were white with black print (far left). The stereo promos usually had a sticker instead of a white label. Promotional albums usually had a large rubber stamp on the back cover, and a timing strip glued to the front cover (near left). |

Note: When Archie Bleyer put the Cadence label into bankruptcy in late 1964, Andy Williams was interested in buying back his own masters. But Bleyer told Williams that if he wanted his masters, he would have to buy the whole label. Williams did just that, eventually starting Barnaby Records to reissue Cadence material. Meanwhile, he reissued two of his albums on Columbia, the label where he was currently under contract. The three unissued numbers below, CL-2325/CS-9125 through CL-2327/CS-9127, were probably reserved for three more of Andy Williams' Cadence reissues, but they were not released.
