The last catalog number to have a commercial release issued in both mono and stereo was on this page,
Gary Puckett & the Union Gap's Incredible (Columbia CL-2915/CS-9715). This, along with Ray
Conniff's Turn Around, Look at Me and Johnny Mathis' Those Were the Days, were
released in October, 1968, about the time that Columbia also stopped providing mono promo copies to
radio stations. From that point, promo copies usually were the stereo albums with the regular labels, with
a timing strip on the front cover.
During 1968, in addition to the usual pop and country artists, Columbia had signed a lot more rock acts,
and as a result saw their percentage of releases making the charts go way up. Part of this priority for rock
acts concentrated on the very active Chicago rock scene, where they were in a hot competition with
Mercury Records. In addition to Columbia signing the Buckinghams and Cryan' Shames, they signed a
very popular group called the Rovin' Kind (right), who had longtime Chicago guitar star Kal David and
future Poco star Paul Cotton. The Rovin' Kind were renamed the Illinois Speed Press to sound a bit more
hip in these psychedelic times. Another group was Aorta, who had evolved from Kal David's original band,
the Exceptions. But the biggest coup was the signing of a large ensemble calling themselves The Next
Big Thing. This unwieldy name was changed to the Chicago Transit Authority. When the city's
government balked, the name was shortened to Chicago, who went on to register over 50 hit singles and
30 albums on the best seller charts over the ensuing 40 years.
The few commercial mono releases on this page used the "two eye" label with "MONO" in white lettering near the bottom (far left). Columbia had discarded the stereo banner at the top when it went to the stereo-only releases, leaving only the word "Stereo" at the top left corner at the top of the Columbia logo. The few mono records released after this change had "Mono" in the logo instead of "Stereo" (near left). | ||
The stereo label (far left) was similar to the mono label (above), but the white lettering near the bottom said "360 SOUND" STEREO "360 SOUND" with two arrows flanking the white legend at the bottom. Promotional albums generally had the regular stereo label, but the album cover had a timing strip on the front (near left). |
