Gusto (GML, Inc.) of Nashville, TN, bought Starday-King from Tennessee Recording and Publishing
in 1975. Gusto immediately got busy reissuing the wealth of material from the King/Federal/DeLuxe
labels as well as the Starday vaults.
One of the earliest of these efforts was a ten-volume series called Old King Gold, released in
1975, which provided many of the hits in various artist format. James Brown's masters were missing, of
course, but the rest was quite solid.
In 1976. Gusto began the 5000X series, which was a reissue series featuring mostly King/Federal
material. The series started with a replica of the blue King label with the straight letters and the small
crown, with a notation that it was a Gusto reissue. The first 12 albums issued in the series featured grey
covers with monochromatic photos of the artists. Starting with 5013, the next five issues (and 5031)
featured a different cover setup designed by one R. Szolkowski. Starting with 5020, the covers shifted to
photos.
For the first two dozen or so albums in the series, the blue King label was used, but starting at 5025, the
series changed to the Gusto imprint with the light blue Gusto label. The series continued until GD-5046
in 1982. The last five albums in the series were a 5-LP set called Roots of American Music
offered as a TV package. Each record featured about two dozen public domain songs by anonymous
artists (really — there were absolutely no artists credits on any of the five albums!). Some sources
say these albums were recorded by "Fred Carter, Jr. and others."
The label used for the Old King Gold series (far left) was yellow with black print, with a "K" logo at the top. This label was also used for King reissues of earlier albums in 1975 and later. The 5000X series started with a replica of the blue King stereo label from the late 1960s (near left), with a notation at the left of the center hole that it was a Gusto reissue. | ||
Starting with GD-5025X, the 5000 series shifted to the Gusto label (far left) with the light blue Gusto label. Later pressings also used a white label with the same graphics. Gusto reissued the 5000X series later, using the Highland label records (near left) sometimes in the same Gusto jackets and sometimes with a Highland logo. Although Highland Music is located in Dearborn, Michigan, according to the label, it is closely connected with Gusto and may be a subsidiary. |
