Grand Prix Series Records was Pickwick reissue label, and existed from the early to mid-1960s.
Initially, Grand Prix was used to reissue most or all of the albums that had previously been released on
the Bravo and International Award labels. The Grand Prix Series used the same catalog numbers as the
Bravo/International Award releases, and even used the same K- and KS- prefixes of the Bravo label.
Occasionally, the Grand Prix Series used different artists names or different album titles, and
occasionally a different front cover slick, but the music in the grooves was the same. Generally, the only
differences between the Bravo, International Award, and Grand Prix releases with the same catalog
numbers was the logo on the front and the generic album back cover.
Relatively late in the label's existence, Grand Prix did issue a 400 series that was not a duplication of the
International Award issues. It was, however, made up of material (and often the same album masters)
as the Design or Hurrah labels, which were more of Pickwick's budget operations.
The early Grand Prix label, like the other Pickwick labels, was black with gold print, with the label name at the top in simple block letters. Later, as with the Design label, Pickwick for a short time used a plain blue label with silver print for their stereo issues and a corresponding black label for mono. Under the label name, both of these labels said, "Pickwick International, Inc., Long Island City, 1, New York". | ||
Most of the mono Grand Prix issues used a black over white label with a full color logo. The stereo counterpart was light grey over dark grey, but with a yellow band around the label edge. Both of these labels had "PICKWICK INTERNATIONAL INC. - LONG PLAYING - UNBREAKABLE" around the bottom of the label. |
