King/Federal/DeLuxe Discography, Part 2:
Main LP Series 500-599

by David Edwards, Mike Callahan and Patrice Eyries
Last update: May 29, 2015

When King Records decided to discontinue 10-inch albums at the end of 1955, they made a clean break, switching completely to 12-inch LPs starting in the 500 series.

The early issues in the 12" album series combined the releases of the King, Federal, and DeLuxe labels. All of the original King albums on this page used the "King Long Playing" logo shown above. Federal albums used a similar logo with "Federal" instead of "King." Reissues and later pressings of most of these albums exist with different (later) logos.

The first label on the King 500 series (far left) was black with silver printing, with the small "KING" above the center hole in letters approximately 1/2 inch high curving around the top of the label, approximately 2 inches across. The DeLuxe label (near left) was black with silver printing, with "DeLuxe" in silver on a straight line at the top of the label; there is a line under the logo.
The Federal label (far left) was black with silver printing, with "Federal" in script above the center hole in a straight line at the top of the label. Although the label at near left looks nice, it comes from a 1970s- vintage bootleg, so it's not a real label. It matches the sought-after green silver-top Federal singles, but Federal has never released a label like this on an album.
The King stereo label (far left) was blue with silver print, with larger "KING" letters, and "STEREO" on either side of the center hole. The Federal stereo label (near left) was blue with silver print, with Federal at the top, with an underlined "STEREO" below the label name. This is probably the only early Federal album issued in stereo.

"Federal 559" - Clyde McPhatter with Billy Ward and His Dominoes - Billy Ward & His Dominoes [197?] This is a 1970s bootleg. It has the Federal number at the top of the front cover. This would not be the way an original Federal cover would look; the logo on a real cover would be in the lower left. The record inside is a flimsy vinyl, not at all like the thick, inflexible vinyl that King/Federal used in the 1950s and early 1960s. The label is a green gold-top Federal, poorly printed. Federal never used this label for any of its albums. There are two extra songs at the end of each side.
