Era Album Discographies

The Era label was formed in 1955 by Herb Newman and Lou Bedell in Hollywood California. The A&R Director for the label was Buddy Bregman. Era recorded popular, country and western and jazz. A companion label Dore (pronounced "Dorrie") was formed in 1958 by Newman and Bedell. In June, 1959, Lou Bedell sold his interest in both labels to Herb Newman.

Era's first success came in October 1955 with pop singer Gogi Grant's "Suddenly There's a Valley." Grant followed that up with a #1 chart hit in March, 1956, "The Wayward Wind," which Herb Newman wrote. In the late '50s, Newman turned to more contemporary Top 40 type music and started having more frequent hits. He recorded Dorsey Burnette, brother of Johnny and former member of the Rock and Roll Trio. Dorsey had his first and biggest hit in February of 1960 with "Tall Oak Tree," which he followed up in June, 1960, with "Hey Little One". In August, 1960, Era scored a #1 hit with the novelty number "Mr. Custer" by Larry Verne. Donnie Brooks had the hit "Mission Bell" for Era in June, 1960.

In 1961 the hits continued with "Sacred" by the Castells, a group from Santa Rosa California. The Castells followed with three more chart hits in 1961 and 1962. Ketty Lester scored her biggest hit, "Love Letters," also in 1962, and followed that up with three more chart hits on Era that year.

Era distributed the Monogram label owned by Jim Lee. Chris Montez recorded a song Jim Lee had written called "Let's Dance" which became a national hit in 1962. Montez followed that up with in December 1962 with "Some Kinda Fun", a song he and Lee had written together. Monogram issued one album by Montez. Chris Montez had more success in 1966 when he went to Herb Alpert's A&M label. Era also had some connection with the Trey label, which was distributed by Atlantic.

About 1969, Era enjoyed a resurgence, at least in terms of releases. They hooked up with Los Angeles- based Happy Tiger Records for distribution and reissued a series of oldies.

Some time in the 1970s, the Era label was sold to K-tel and became part of their empire. The once- proud Era name was soon subjected to the indignity of being an outlet for bogus versions of rock and roll hits re-recorded by "at least one member of the original group." In the 1990s, K-tel began reissuing some of the early Era material on a series of CDs using the original logo. These are included in this discography, but the hundreds of albums offered under the K-tel/Era banner during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s will be covered later under K-tel.

100 Popular Music Series:

Originally, the 100 series used the same label as the 20000 series before it. It was black with silver printing. "ERA RECORDS" in a silver oval above the center hole, with electrons flying around the logo. The corresponding promotional label was pink with black printing, with the same graphics. This label was probably used only to EL-102 and ES-700.

A more colorful and less conservative Era label was designed and used on later 100 series issues. It was blue on the top and green on the bottom with a white band running horizontally through the center hole. In the white band was "ERA" Records on the right side and "ERA Records" in a black oval with electrons flying around the logo on the left side. The same label was used for both monaural and stereo. Promotional issues of this label were orange at the top and bottom of the label with black printing. In a white band going through the center hole was "ERA" Records on the right side and "ERA Records" in a black oval with electrons flying around the logo on the left side. Underneath the logo was "PROMOTIONAL COPY".

Mono albums in the 100 series carried an "EL-" prefix, while stereo issues used the "ES-" prefix. For those numbers where a stereo issue is known, the "ES-" prefix is used in the discography below. Others may have been issued in mono only.

ERA COMPACT DISCS:

The following are on the Era label, released by K-tel.

5011-2 - The Wayward Wind: The Best of Gogi Grant - Gogi Grant [1993] Unbelievable. Real master tapes instead of records for a change. Very clean and clear, with a bonus undubbed version of "The Wayward Wind," which apparently was a throwaway song done in one take at the end of a session. You never can tell. Anyway, a wonderful CD of Gogi's Era material sounding like it should, finally. All tracks mono. The Wayward Wind/Love Is/You're In Love/I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart/What's New/The One I Love (Belongs To Somebody Else)/I Gave You My Heart/We Believe In Love/It Happens Every Spring/Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams/Who Are We/Suddenly There's A Valley/When The Tide Is High/No More Than Forever/Love Is The Sweetest Thing/All Of Me/The Wayward Wind (undubbed, i.e., no french horns; with studio talk)

5019-2 - Best of the Castells - Castells [1995] Excellent sound. Stereo mix is the same odd mix on the original stereo LP. So This Is Love (S)/Sacred (S)/Little Sad Eyes (S)/I Get Dreamy (S)/Oh! What It Seemed To Be (S)/Dancing In The Dark (S)/Make Believe Wedding (S)/Some Enchanted Evening (S)/On The Street Of Tears (M)/Initials (M, slight noise)/My Miracle (M)/Romeo (M)/Stand There Mountain (S)/Vision Of You (S)/Clown Prince (S)/Stiki De Boom Boom (S)/What Do Little Girls Dream Of (M)/I Do (M)

5020-2 - The Birds and the Bees: The Best of Jewel Akens - Jewel Akens [1994] Outstanding sound. All tracks stereo. The Birds And The Bees/Around The Corner (From My House)/Love Potion No. 9/Tic Tac Toe/It's The Only Way To Fly/Sukiyaki (My First Lonely Night)/Georgie Porgie/King Of The Road (hissy)/So This Is Love/You Sure Know How To Hurt A Fellow/Dear Heart/A Slice Of Pie/Michael/The Vegetable Love Song/Sniff-Sniff-Poo-Pah-Pahdoo (alternate take, with studio talk and countoff)

5021-2 - The Best of Dorsey Burnette: The Era Years - Dorsey Burnette [1994] Excellent sound. (There Was A) Tall Oak Tree (S)/Hey Little One (S)/That's Me Without You (S)/Hard Rock Mine (S)/Red Roses (S)/That Lucky Old Sun (S)/Great Shakin' Fever (M)/Hard Working Man (S)/Big Rock Candy Mountain (S)/The Ghost Of Billy Maloo (S)/It's No Sin (S)/I Got The Sun In The Morning (S)/Suddenly There's A Valley (S)/Noah's Ark (S)/The Wayward Wind (S)/Lazy Bones (S)/(There Was A) Tall Oak Tree (E, alternate take)
